In the textile and apparel industry the economy loses about $10.04 billion dollars per year from trade barriers, and the net loss of employment without trade barriers is 55,000 jobs, so the average cost per job saved is $182,545. Our government is spending $182,545 per job saved and yet the annual salary of these jobs is less than $50,000. Given the high cost of trade barriers and low value of the jobs saved, is protection worth it? Do the benefits of free trade out weigh the costs of it (jobs that would be eliminated)?
