Why do you wait to have until marriage?

I have recently been struggling with this issue because my boyfriend, although a devout Catholic, had slept with several people in his past. I struggle with this because I have chosen to wait for reasons pertaining to my faith. I am wondering why others wait, and I am confused as to why this hurts me so badly even though many people have before marriage.
