With the polygon you just add the vectors nose-to-tail and the resultant is the vector from the tail of the first vector to the head of the last one. With components you add the horizontal components to a total, add the vertical components to a total, then combine the two totals. Which method you use depends on the problem. The second method (or a slightly different version of it) is more mathematical.
